The Wednesday After: Engaging Donors After #GivingTuesday

Donor Blog

#GivingTuesday is an amazing opportunity to acquire new donors, but your efforts will fall flat if you don’t have follow-up plans in place. Here are some things you’ll want to have ready to go before November 29.

  • Welcoming new donors — Have your welcoming process planned for new donors who give on November 28. Check out our free downloadable Welcome Kit In it, we give you a step-by-step guide for onboarding new supporters, plus you’ll have access to templates that you can adapt and use for communications with them.
  • A compelling appeal — Know what your next appeal will be and make sure it’s compelling and campaign-oriented. The best thing you can do is get the donors who gave for the first time on #GivingTuesday to give again. Make sure your next appeal is similar in nature to what they gave to on #GivingTuesday (i.e., if your #GivingTuesday campaign had a strong humanitarian cause, choose a similar cause for your next appeal).
  • Low monthly ask — Moving one-time givers to monthly givers is fundraising gold, but knowing that many of your newly acquired #GivingTuesday donors are Millennials and possibly new to your organization, you don’t want to go for too big of an ask right away. Offer an affordable way to get involved on an ongoing basis.
  • Offer ways to get involved beyond giving – Millennials love being part of something. Think about ways to plug new contacts into volunteer opportunities, crowdfunding, and so forth. This increases engagement with your organization, which can increase long-term giving.
  • Reach them where they are — Make sure you’re following up on the platforms where Millennials most like to communicate. Your social media channels should be filled with relevant, targeted content and all platforms should be integrated for your communication goals.

Your #GivingTuesday follow-up plan is just as important as the groundwork you’ve laid in preparing for the day’s campaign. Make sure you’re ready to effectively receive your new supporters and encourage them for long-term participation beyond giving.

How is your nonprofit organization planning to engage your new donors on November 29?
